My two (Euro) cents about CS PhDs in Europe
November 17, 2024This month brought more adventures in bureaucracy, with the highlight being the ongoing saga of converting my Washington State driver’s license to a German one. In theory, it should be a simple process—straightforward, even. But a comedy of errors (let’s just say mistakes were made) turned it into something far more chaotic than expected. The process continues, and I’m crossing my fingers for a resolution soon.
Stay tuned—there may be more twists to come in this saga!
On the health front, I had some dental work done. The experience has been positive so far, but nothing extraordinary—certainly not enough to have me rallying Americans to move here for the healthcare.
I also restarted my German studies. Progress has been steady, and I’m aiming to make significant strides during the holidays.
At MPI-SP, I graded internship candidates, and the pool of applicants is a completely different experience compared to my previous institution. It’s fascinating to see the variation in talent and focus.
One highlight of the month was Abhik Roychoudhury’s visit to MPI. I gained a lot of insight into program repair, but it also reminded me how much I still have to learn. Inspiring and humbling all at once.
On a lighter note, Coleman and I had one of our classic chats, which immediately reminded me of this meme/video. When I shared it with him, he agreed, saying, “verbatim.”
To wrap up the month, we celebrated American Thanksgiving with our Dutch friends. It was a lovely way to bring a little slice of home to Europe.
